Profile:

Ciba, part of BASF since April 2009, is a leading global company dedicated to producing high-value effects for its customers’ products. We create effects that improve the quality of life – adding performance, protection, color and strength to plastics, paper, automobiles, buildings, home and personal care products and much more. Ciba brings new and creative thought to the processes and products of our customers in more than 120 countries.

For our company Germany is the most important market within Europe. About 1610 employees work in our production plants, research and development units and in our sales organization at our sites in Grenzach and Lampertheim.

Founded in 1898, the Grenzach site hosts the global research and development activities for Ciba, and the plant formulates and produces high-quality specialties for all segments. Today around 910 employees (785 FTE) are working on site, 199 of which work in R&D and 711 in production and services.

The key component in a recordable CD and DVD  is the recording dye. The dye is responsible for forming the data marks during recording, for media performance and for the longevity of the information once stored. The dye is spin-coated onto the substrate, fills the grooves, and is then dried forming a thin, solid film. This dye layer is the active layer in a CDR and DVD+R as well as DVD-R disc.

Ciba IRGAPHOR functional dyes and their associated processes are leading solutions for the optical media industry. Our proprietary phthalocyanine and metal complex dye  technology – combined with process engineering expertise – allows the manufacture of superb quality media capable of recording at the fastest speeds.

Ciba’s patented IRGAPHOR dyes are the leading recording dyes for optical media: offering simple high-yield processing, ease of handling, high light and environmental stability, they produce high quality media capable of recording at all speeds.

Our IRGACURE and DAROCUR range of UV photoinitiators are ideal for CD-lacquer coatings and DVD bonding adhesives.
